New house updates: our living room, currently

Boho living room

We closed on our new house in November, and we've been working our butts off ever since that memorable day when we received the keys, popped a bottle of champagne, and took a sledge hammer to the existing kitchen cabinets :)

We've worked on several projects simultaneously, especially once the initial demolition stage was over. Now that we've mostly moved on to finishing touches (with a few exceptions in the kitchen, our master bathroom, and our master bedroom), we've been able to throw some paint on the walls and furnish some of the rooms to our liking.

One of the biggest challenges we've had, from a design perspective, is meshing our tastes with the home's natural character and era—it was built in 1930. We're learning that some things just don't quite look at home here, and we're learning to grapple with that and meet somewhere "in the middle." So while neither of us are totally in love with classic furniture and decor, we're experimenting with what else works when juxtaposed with the colonial backdrop that we fell in love with. We're finding that a sort of Bohemian mix of old and new, modern and rustic feels right in the house. Warm woods, calm colors and patterns, old materials (marble, wood, brass), bright whites, and lots of greenery seem to be working so far. I wouldn't say any one room is totally done yet, but the house is really starting to feel like our own, and one that we can really enjoy living in as we get to know it (and our lifestyle in it) better and better.

I thought I'd show some before-and-after pictures of our current living room space, even though it isn't done-done (there's a whole section of it that is still empty! By the way, we're taking recommendations and suggestions for what to do with the space in front of the big bay windows. And there isn't anything hung on the walls yet, either.), in case you'd like to see.

I'll source items where I'm able (at the end of the post!), but just ask if you have any specific questions about anything.
